Balance

Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture and space. This photo is a good example of balance because there is a great balance of colors.

Pattern

Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol in a piece of art. In this photo, the jagged lines show a lot of pattern.

Emphasis

Picture
Emphasis is the part of a design that catches the viewers attention. The heart is the focal point of this image.

Repetition

Picture
Repetition works with pattern to make the art seem active, it also creates a design. This picture has a pattern with the colors of the pencils and the way the pencils are positioned makes the picture seem active.

Movement/Direction/Gradation

Picture
Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the artwork, often to focal areas. This picture is a wonderful example of movement because it is guiding you down the tunnel, the end of the tunnel is the focal point.

Proportion

Picture
Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts of an image relate to each other. This image shows proportion because it displays the size of the canyon by also capturing a person to compare their sizes.

Harmony

Picture
Harmony is the effect of combining similar related elements like color. In this photo, the dark, deep colors all compliment each other.

Rhythm

Picture
Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of  movement.  This image shows organized movement with the zig zag lines.

Contrast

Contrast is the occurence of differing elements such as color, value, size. This image shows different values and colors.

Variety

Picture
Variety is the use of many design elements to capture the viewers attention. This photo, uses line, value and color to hold the viewers attention.
